I Gave ChatGPT 50+ Movies To Tell Me Who I Am
Who doesn’t love a good movie? There’s something special about a well-made piece of visual art and storytelling that immerses us in a whole new world, giving our overly active consciousness a break from reality, inviting us into the story, if only for a good ninety minutes or so.
Depending on the type of movie you’re watching, those ninety minutes or more can stay with you for a long time, lingering in the back of your mind like a problem you need to try and solve. Mind-benders like Mulholland Drive by the late David Lynch, or one of my all-time favourites, Whiplash.
Some of the worst nightmares imaginable can start out as wonderful dreams…
How far will you go to achieve greatness?
Movies like these offer more than just a great story; they challenge you to think. They present complex characters and ideas that can be interpreted in many different ways, ultimately leaving you wanting more: more suspense, more twists, and, hopefully, by the end, more answers. This is exactly what I want if I’m going to invest the time in watching a movie. Not always, but mostly.
Recently, I’ve started to wonder, what does a person’s taste in movies say about them? Are there any common similarities or themes between the kinds of stories we love to watch and how we choose to live our lives? I’m not saying that fans of crime dramas are passionate detectives in real life (although I’m sure some are); I am more interested in exploring personality traits that are reflected in the types of films that resonate with us.
Maybe the crime drama aficionados are great problem-solvers and enjoy challenging problems in their day-to-day work? Or the action and adventure fans love pushing themselves to the limits, both physically and mentally.
Examining my collection of movies, I became increasingly curious about posing the question: what does my love of specific movies say about me?
So I decided to try this fun little thought experiment with ChatGPT. Here’s the prompt I used:
Based on the types of movies I love, I want you to perform an analysis on what kind of person you think I am.

I used ChatGPT’s O3 model, which utilises advanced reasoning, for this experiment. After eleven seconds of ‘thought’, the response it produced was, honestly, pretty mind-blowing.
Here is the complete response:
Below is a (necessarily speculative) profile built from the recurring themes, genres and character arcs that run through your favourite films. Take it as an informed “reading” rather than a diagnosis.
1. Core Narrative Threads I Notice
2. Personality & Cognitive Style
High Openness to Experience
Diverse genres and experimental narratives point to a taste for novelty, abstract ideas and creative expression.Mastery‑Orientation & Conscientiousness
Protagonists who train obsessively or execute meticulous plans resonate with you, implying you value diligence, competence and continual self‑improvement.Analytical & Systems‑Thinker
Films about markets, espionage, intelligence work and elaborate heists suggest you enjoy mapping how complex systems operate – a trait that dovetails with a cyber‑security career.Sensation‑Seeking Balanced by Intellect
Adrenaline‑fuelled action sits comfortably next to cerebral thrillers; you likely pursue both physical and mental stimulation (e.g., challenging workouts plus strategic games or investing).Moral Pragmatist
Many favourites feature anti‑heroes who bend rules for a perceived greater good. You probably judge actions by effectiveness and intent rather than by strict convention.Selective Sentimentalist
The inclusion of heartfelt, even cheesy comfort watches shows you’re not all edge – you compartmentalise, switching between intensity and warmth as needed.
3. Likely Values & Motivators
4. Social & Professional Hints
Work – You thrive in high‑stakes environments that reward quick analysis, strategic planning and decisive action (e.g., security operations, trading, incident response).
Hobbies – Martial arts, musical performance, technical tinkering, high‑end cinema, gaming/puzzles; anything that combines skill progression with measurable feedback.
Relationships – You likely value a small circle of people who appreciate both your intensity and your softer side; banter and shared challenges strengthen these bonds.
Growth Edge – Because many preferred stories romanticise obsession, watch for work–life balance drift. Actively schedule low‑stakes downtime to recharge empathy and creativity.
5. One‑Sentence Snapshot
You’re an ambitious, systems‑minded high‑performer who relishes intellectual and sensory intensity, prizes craftsmanship and competence, but still keeps space for nostalgia, humour and human connection.
Remember: Film tastes are only one lens. If any of this rings true, great; if not, chalk it up to the limits of cinematic psychology!
Conclusion
I like how the response emphasised that this analysis is, of course, just a single lens and quite a subjective one at that. However, with that said, a lot of the above does resonate with me, both personally and professionally.
Perhaps that’s by design, or perhaps it’s simply true that what we like to watch is a reflection of who we are and how we perceive ourselves.
I recommend giving this a try and seeing for yourself! The response might surprise you.
